Your heavenly Father knows
that you need these things.
(Matthew 6:32)
November is National Adoption Awareness Month! It’s a time when Americans can –
-
raise awareness about adoption and adoption options
-
honor families and birth parents who have strengthened America through adoption
-
commit ourselves to building strong, safe families for every child
In 1976, then-Governor Mike Dukakis proclaimed Adoption Week in Massachusetts. The idea grew in popularity and spread to other states. It was President Reagan who made official the first National Adoption Week in 1984. Later, in 1995, President Clinton expanded the celebration to the entire month of November.
This year, the National Adoption Awareness Month theme is, “You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to be a Perfect Parent.” What an encouragement for anyone who has given birth or is raising a child!
No parent is perfect except our heavenly Father. He partners with parents of all kinds – from birth parents to adoptive parents to step parents to foster parents – in raising a child.
This National Adoption Awareness Month, take time to affirm a birth parent that has placed. Encourage an adoptive parent. And when parents you know feel discouraged, offer them some grace. The Perfect Parent Award has already been given out, anyway.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for partnering with birth parents, adoptive parents, step parents, and foster parents to raise children.
Show me how to encourage the parents I know.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
