By Lorraine Meyer, Birthmothers-Colorado Director
As a new regional Birthmothers chapter in Colorado, we have worked hard to help local women to learn about us.
We telephone and visit government agencies, churches, pregnancy care centers, adoption organizations, doctors, medical clinics, women’s groups, mother’s groups, youth ministries, coffee shops and anywhere else we can think of so we can explain that Birthmothers provides the missing link of a Friend to walk with a woman one-on-one during an unplanned pregnancy. We ask for permission to display our brochures and business cards.
If the first contact doesn’t work, we persist. Sometimes success lies in simply connecting with the right person in an organization, whether it’s the director of client services, the office manager, or the leader herself.
We received our first phone call from a pregnant woman in November 2009. Since then, women continue to find us through Birthmothers’ websites, referrals, churches, clinics, agencies, and other partners.
Women who face an unplanned pregnancy need a Friend. We make every effort to let them know we’re here and available to offer one.
Birthmothers uses volunteers to help spread the word about its one-on-one services to pregnant women. Learn how you can help promote the ministry when you call (703) 261-6370 in metro DC or (970) 481-4787 in CO.
Can delivering flyers to a church, making phone calls, and using a copier machine help save the life of an unborn child?
The answer is a resounding “Yes!”
Birthmothers is looking for a few good men and women to volunteer at the office, in the car, and on the phone. “Many of our Friends and partners are unaware of how volunteering can impact Birthmothers positively,” says President Jim Wright. “It takes dozens of tasks to run this ministry. We need you!” (To volunteer,

.)
Past volunteers have provided support at Birthmothers events and occasionally in the office. But historically, volunteers have served Birthmothers primarily as trained Friends. No doubt, that’s still the crux of the ministry’s volunteer push.
“If you aren’t trained as a Friend and would like to serve a pregnant woman or a birth dad, we want to hear from you,” says Jim.
Other kinds of volunteers will help grow the ministry
Now, as Birthmothers readies to identify and build new Church Teams in churches, it needs more manpower to take care of simple tasks to multiply ministry efforts.
Friends who are not currently matched with a pregnant woman, or those who feel called to prolife ministry apart from one-on-one care-giving, might consider investing a few hours each week to Birthmothers. Birthmothers needs volunteer services in the following areas. Call (703) 261-6370 or
